OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

Duke Facilities Management (FMD) supports the mission of Duke University by providing excellence in planning, design, construction, cleanliness, operations and maintenance for facilities, grounds and utilities in a customer-focused, safe, efficient and sustainable manner.

Energy Management at Duke formally reports through the Duke Utilities and Engineering Services organization, but also provide essential services to Facility Operations (O&M in University buildings). We are unique among peers in that we execute both supply and demand side services. Utilities serve more than 20M square feet of University and Health System facilities, and our building demand-side portfolio is nearly 7M square feet of University buildings.

The FMD Energy Management team fulfills five main roles: 1) manage automation systems and support operations and maintenance staff in the use of the technology; 2) forecast, budget and procure energy and water for the campus, and internally meter and bill campus facilities for these services; 3) execute renewable energy and energy/water conservation measure projects; 4) acquire, organize, and report on a variety of operational data; and 5) support academic engagement as needed.

 

Responsibilities

The Automation Systems Supervisor/Engineer position will lead a subset of the Energy Management team that is responsible for safe, reliable, and efficient operation of direct digital control (DDC) and programmable logic controller (PLC) automation systems in district energy plants, utilities distribution, and University buildings on Duke University’s main campus, and for building and plant Building Automation System (BAS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software platforms. This position reports to the Energy Manager.

The ideal candidate for this role combines technical expertise in automation and control hardware and software systems with the leadership abilities necessary to supervise staff, develop workflow processes, coordinate external support vendor partners, and ultimately to successfully execute the day-to-day operation of campus automation systems.

 

Typical Duties

· Organize controls engineers, specialists, and technicians in the efficient operation and maintenance of campus automation systems.

· Self-perform troubleshooting and/or coordinate staff to troubleshoot BAS and SCADA software and hardware problems.

· Develop task lists and schedules, and coordinate BAS/SCADA system work with relevant users (building operators, plant operators, engineers, etc.)

· Process relevant work order/workflow tasks for employees utilizing Duke’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).

· Implement a change management process and program for BAS and SCADA systems, including the tracking and approval for user access, system architecture/ device connectivity, software upgrades, and other relevant items.

· Recommend improvements to BAS/SCADA graphics standards, point naming, and project delivery methods.

· Review engineering plans, specifications, and other project design information in order to ensure that any new automation systems will be installed to Duke’s satisfaction.

· Work with Facilities Management team members to develop scopes of work for upgrading building and plant automation hardware and software.

· Develop, review, and revise BAS and SCADA graphics, data collection trends, and reports in order to help operations staff gain operational intelligence and more efficiently operate equipment and plan for necessary system changes.

· When necessary, create and compile internal training material to help other Facilities Management staff become better, more self-reliant users of automation systems.

· Participate in regular operations coordination meetings for district energy systems.

· Assist building and plant operations personnel in district energy systems troubleshooting.

· Assist the Energy Manager in automation systems master planning efforts

· Assist Energy Management team members in the development and execution of energy conservation measure and facility improvement measure projects.

 

Professional Qualifications

The qualified candidate will possess at minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, engineering technology, or physical sciences, combined with:

· Five or more years with the following work experiences:

o Engineering, installation, operation, maintenance, and/or end-use of both direct digital control (DDC) and programmable logic controller (PLC) automation systems commonly found in commercial and industrial settings for control of HVAC, power generation, thermal generation, and other mechanical and electrical sytems.

o User of more than one building automation system (BAS) and/or plant supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software.

o Typical office suite software applications (spreadsheets, word processing, presentation material, PDF editors, etc.).

o Engineering design and project software (CAD tools, schematic diagramming, project management scheduling, etc.).

 

· Three or more years with the following work experiences:

o Direct supervisory role over engineering and technical staff.

o Experience working with consulting engineers, construction managers, contractors, commissioning agents, and other building professionals and tradespersons commonly encountered in industrial and commercial facilities management.

 

Strong preference will be given to candidates with:

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Work experience in power generation, industrial, and district energy settings.

· Energy management experience, as either an energy services provider, owner’s representative, or facility operator.

· Work experience in transitioning industrial or commercial facilities from obsolete to current automation hardware and software.

· Work experience in the integration and management of industrial/commercial automation systems with modern IT infrastructure.

· The ability to design and edit programming code for DDC and PLC systems.

· Experience working with the MS Power Platform and other Office365 applications.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a Bachelor’s degree in a specific engineering field related to construction (e.g. Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) and eligibility for North Carolina licensure as an Engineer.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of three years experience in design, planning, OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE evaluation and project management related to new construction and renovation of buildings and/or systems.
